Early Scoring Binge Pays Off

Saint John Union’s high-powered offense took control in the opening minute and the defense had to hold on for a dramatic home-court win.

The Union knocked down 38 points in the first quarter and managed to defeat the Moncton Motion 114-109 in the new Eastern Canadian Basketball League game Saturday night at TD Station.

The Union built a 26-point lead in the opening half, but the Motion closed the gap to just one point in the fourth quarter, but they could not overtake the home side.

The win gives the Union an 8-6 record and the Motion fell to 4-6.

Kyler Haynes led the Union with36 points. Jamelle Toliver and Chevon Brown each netted 20 points while Mike Rodriquez chipped in with 15 points and 15 assists.

Robbie Robinson paced the Motion with 32 points and 18 rebounds. Isaiah Ankra added 25 points and Jeff Montenegro had 16.

League play continues on Sunday, when the Charlottetown Power (7-6) host the Motion. Game time is 2 p.m. at the Eastlink Centre.
