Powell
JoBreil Powell admits he did not pay a lot of attention to defense as a young basketball player, but that’s changed as he’s matured in the game. The six-foot shooting guard from Minneapolis, Minnesota will bring a committed and complete approach focused on team success to the Eastern Canadian Basketball League, which begins its first season in late March.
“As a kid, I just wanted to score, but I think people call me a triple threat now,” says the 26 year-old product of Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, where he majored in mass communications. “I still score, but I can also rebound and get some assists to help the team’s offense,” he adds. “On defense, I like to guard the other team’s best player – I’m always up for a challenge.”
Powell’s aggressive defensive play may have been instilled in him from a young age. He’s the youngest of 12 children – he has six sisters and five brothers.
“I always had to battle for everything, and I bring that attitude to the basketball court,” Powell notes. “It also makes me a lot more accountable. I want to use every skill that God has given me.”
Since his collegiate days, Powell has played for various teams with the Overseas Basketball Connection and briefly with The Basketball League. He’s looking forward to making his first trip to Eastern Canada.
“It’s always been a goal of mine to play professional basketball,” Powell says. “I am going to make the most of it. I want to be a true pro and give something back to my community – especially the kids. “I will be giving kids positive messages about never giving up on your dreams.”
