On the Job Training
There’s not much glamor or profile, and invaluable experience is regarded as compensation. However, the position of second assistant coach is highly-respected in the Eastern Canadian Basketball League, which begins its inaugural season in late March.
“They are apprentices and they are learning more about coaching every day,” says league founder Ravi Verma.“We’re expecting to see these assistant coaches develop their skills, just like the players,” he adds. “I expect a lot of them to wind up becoming head coaches in professional basketball in the future.”
The league features seven teams – Moncton Motion, Bathurst Bears, Saint John Union, Charlottetown Power, Summerside Slam, Truro Tide and Valley Vipers. Besides the 12 players on each roster, each team will have three people on the payroll – the head coach, assistant coach and manager of business and basketball operations.
Each team will also have an unpaid assistant coach.
“They are going to play important roles – from reviewing game videos, helping the head coach with preparation to taking care of the players,” Verma says.
All teams are taking applications for their second assistant position. Applicants can submit their names and resumes through the Opportunities section on the league’s website.
“I have had numerous assistant coaches that I have helped get head jobs or better jobs and I am happy and proud of that,” says Saint John head coach Rob Spon. “Assistants and my support staff are very important to me, the team and the organization.”
Anthony Anderson will serve as first assistant coach with the Union.
