Bear Hugs in Bathurst

Paul Theriault admits he’s a little overwhelmed – just the way he had hoped. Theriault, the manager of business and basketball operations for the Bathurst Bears, hosted a meeting on Monday night in order to measure interest in the new Eastern Canadian Basketball League team.

“I can’t believe it – my phone hasn’t stopped, the emails and messages are coming in all of the time,” Theriault said the next morning. “People in northern New Brunswick are excited about professional basketball coming to town,” he added. “It’s incredible – after the meeting I couldn’t settle down and my mind has been going a million miles an hour ever since.”

Participants at the meeting at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre was hand-picked by Theriault. They represented business leaders, basketball enthusiasts and others who want to volunteer with the Bears.

“I’ve sold sponsorships after the meeting and more have told me they want to be on board,” Theriault noted.

“It’s not just a Bathurst team – this is for the Acadian Peninsula, the Miramichi, Restigouche and Chaleur and the First Nations at Pabineau and Listugaj. “It’s a team for the whole north shore and we’re getting great feedback from the entire region.”

Long-time basketball official Guilman Roy will be in charge of the scorers’ and timer’s table. Serge Thomas will be his assistant.

Sponsorship, housing, promotions and transportation committees will also be created. Bathurst Bears, Moncton Motion, Saint John Union, Charlottetown Power, Summerside Slam, Truro Tide and Valley Vipers will launch the first season in late March.
