Mentors in Motion

Moncton Motion head coach Todd McKillop is eager to see his coaching staff work with their players as they prepare for the inaugural season of the Eastern Canadian Basketball League. McKillop, who has successfully coached Harrison Trimble High School and Crandall University teams and has served as a long-time assistant in the National Basketball League of Canada, has assembled a veteran coaching staff for the Motion.

“I know we are all going to work well together and we’ll get as much as we possibly can from the players,” McKillop says. “I can hardly wait to get going and see how things unfold,” adds the Moncton native and former St. Francis Xavier University standout.

The Motion will begin training camp on or near March 15. Their regular season will begin April 6, when they host the Bathurst Bears at the Avenir Centre. Greg Gould, who has more than 50 years of coaching experience at the high school and university levels who guided the first-year Moncton Mystics of the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association last season, is McKillop’s first assistant coach.

“Basically, my job is to do anything the head coach needs me to do,” Gould says. “That might involve input into practice planning and implementation, team offense, and defense organization, scouting and assisting in developing game plans and giving feedback during practices and games.”

Matt Robertson, a Moncton native who played for and served as an assistant coach with Moncton teams in the NBL of Canada, is the second assistant coach.

“He is excited to have the opportunity to learn, and help guide a new team to success while supporting the community,” McKillop said.

The Motion’s apprentice coach is Matt Webber, a Woodstock native who won three New Brunswick high school titles as a player. Webber has also served as an assistant coach with McKillop at Crandall University, is the head coach with New Brunswick’s Under-16 provincial team.

“He hopes to gain experience at the pro level with the Motion, using his growing specialties in Xs and Os, film study, and scouting to contribute to the team’s success behind the scenes,” McKillop notes.
