Eddy Backs Bears

Eddy Group Ltd., which has been a mainstay of Bathurst’s economy for more than 100 years, sees the Bathurst Bears as an integral part of the city’s future. Branch manager Brian Lavigne says the new Eastern Canadian Basketball League team has brought “some new energy” to Bathurst and the surrounding area. Eddy Group, which has 200 employees, including about 50 in Bathurst, has become a major corporate sponsor for the Bears.

“It is great to see so many different faces at the arena during their games,” Lavigne says. “I think that as our team and league grow, you will see some great rivalries between teams and cities,” he continues. “This will help develop minor basketball programs within the area, too. This is a win-win for the region.”

The Eddy Group of companies began operations in Bathurst in the late 1800s. It was incorporated in 1909, when George Eddy was running a sawmill, finishing mill, millwork shop, carriage shop and a flour mill.

By the 1950s, the family company shifted its emphasis to building materials, hardware, mechanical and electrical supplies with branches in Bathurst, Fredericton, Miramichi, Saint John and Dieppe in New Brunswick as well as Charlottetown in Prince Edward Island and Amherst, Truro, Kentville and Bridgewater in Nova Scotia.

The Bathurst hardware store is located at 660 St-Anne Street, a short distance from the K.C. Irving Regional Centre, home of the Bears. The home court is on the Eddy Rink at the arena.

Papa Johns

In 1984, Papa Johns Pizza started in the small town of Jeffersonville, Indiana, and its popularity has spread all the way to Atlantic Canada. Today, Papa Johns boasts over 3,600 restaurants and can be found in more than 35 international markets outside of the USA. In Atlantic Canada, we opened our first Papa Johns franchise in Moncton, operating under the name of PJ Atlantic Restaurants Ltd. in 2009.
