Cordell Jeanty, who played professional basketball for 14 years, has a few tips for rookies coming into the new Eastern Canadian Basketball League.
“As a pro, you have to always pay attention to details, listen to others around you and be willing to sacrifice for the good of the team,” Jeanty says.
The 43 year-old Toronto native, who played as a small forward in the National Basketball League of Canada for five teams and also in the Premier Basketball League, has been hired as an assistant coach with the Bathurst Bears. Jeanty played for Bears head coach Serge Langis, when he coached the Moncton Miracles.
“Serge and I have good chemistry together so I know we are going to work well together with our players,” Jeanty says.
The league will announce its first player signings on February 1. Training camps will begin in mid-March and games will start in late March. Jeanty was a fan favorite when he played in Moncton because he was active in community events and made countless special appearances.
“I’m looking forward to meeting a lot of people in Bathurst,” he notes. “Our league and the Bears plan on being very visible around town. We’ll do a lot of work in the schools and with the kids in the community.”
Jeanty resides in Halifax, where he works with 902 Man-Up, a non-profit agency that assists homeless persons.
“It’s very rewarding when you can work with people who need help,” he says. “I’ve always been that way. I like to help people whenever I can.”
