Charged Up

Gail MacDonald admits the Charlottetown Power are a little behind in its preparations for the upcoming Eastern Canadian Basketball League season. However, the team’s energetic and affable Manager of Business and Basketball operations is ready to make up for lost time.

“In Charlottetown, there are a lot of people who love basketball and there are a lot of people who want to help Power become successful,” MacDonald says.

The Power are one of six teams that will play a 26-game regular season schedule in the new league, which tips off at the end of March. Moncton Motion, Saint John Union, Bathurst Bears, Truro Tide and Valley Vipers will also compete in the league, which is promising a high-level of play and community engagement away from the court.

MacDonald says several volunteers have already shown interest in working with the Power. However, Prince Edward Island is currently hosting the Canada Games, a two-week multi-sports festival, and many of the volunteers are tied up with those events.

“It’s on everyone’s mind right now so I know we’ll get more volunteers after the Canada Games,” MacDonald notes. “It’s the same as sponsors. We’ve had a lot of them tell us to call back after the Games,” she continues. “I have all of the confidence in the world that we’re going to succeed even if we are a little behind right now.”

Lonnie States is the team’s head coach.

“Everyone loves Lonnie and he’s going to make sure we’re making an impact in the community,” MacDonald says.
