Earning Their Stripes

Roger Caulfield, whose basketball resume is filled with remarkable highlights from the past, is eager to see what the future holds. Caulfield, who has about 40 years of officiating experience at the provincial, national and international levels, has been selected Director of Officials of the Eastern Canadian Basketball League.

“I’m excited about the new league because it’s going to give opportunities for young referees to work at the professional level,” the 69 year-old member of the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame says.

“We’re going to work with about 30 young referees from all over the Maritimes,” he adds. “These men and women are going to get a lot of experience at a very high level.”

Caulfield, a Springhill native who resides in Falmouth, near Windsor, Nova Scotia, has worked at 22 Canadian Interuniversity Sport championships, including 18 finals. He also officiated more than 1,000 Atlantic University Sports games, 125 international games and represented Canada at four world championship tournaments.

The former school teacher is also the founder of Caulfield Camp of Excellence in Halifax, where he has helped develop hundreds of young officials. Caulfield will serve as a mentor for the Eastern Canadian Basketball League’s referees and will be the assigning official.

“They will have to be at the top of their game and they’ll have to be quick because the players in this league will be playing at a pace they are not used to at the university and college level.”

Moncton Motion, Bathurst Bears, Saint John Union, Valley Vipers, Truro Tide, Charlottetown Power and Summerside Slam will begin the inaugural season of the ECBL in late March.

Papa Johns

In 1984, Papa Johns Pizza started in the small town of Jeffersonville, Indiana, and its popularity has spread all the way to Atlantic Canada. Today, Papa Johns boasts over 3,600 restaurants and can be found in more than 35 international markets outside of the USA. In Atlantic Canada, we opened our first Papa Johns franchise in Moncton, operating under the name of PJ Atlantic Restaurants Ltd. in 2009.

This was the first of many Papa Johns restaurants to be opening over the next few years to serve the Maritime provinces. We now have a dozen restaurants in the following areas:
