All Tide Up

Truro Tide head coach Patrick Havard believes in patience, but there are limits. Havard says the Tide features several young players as they prepare to open the inaugural season of the new Eastern Canadian Basketball League.

“Yes, patience is good, but you also have to push a lot of these young guys because they have more skill than they give themselves credit for,” the coach explains. “By pushing a little, the talent will come out. Our team has talent, but it has to present itself.”

The Tide open their regular season on Thursday night against the Valley Vipers. Game time is 7 p.m. at the Cobequid Education Centre. The Tide have been practicing without a full roster because some players have been late arriving.

“We have a great leader (Tyrone Watson) who will be a mentor for these young players,” Havard says. “He knows what effort is needed when you play at the pro level,” he adds. “It’s a big step from the university game so his leadership is going to be very valuable.”

The Tide are starting to promote themselves in the community and Havard hopes a large and supportive crowd will attend the opener.

“I think we’re going to have some momentum and we’ll keep building as the season goes on,” the veteran coach says.
