Lonnie’s Law

Charlottetown Power head coach Lonnie States has a clear message for his players – even though he won’t know any of them for another week or so. States will demand a full effort from his players on and off the court during their inaugural season in the new Eastern Canadian Basketball League.

“The excitement is building and the fans are looking forward to it so I will look for the same kind of excitement from our players,” States says.

The Power are expected to begin training camp on or near March 20.

Their first regular season game is scheduled for April 6 in Berwick, Nova Scotia against the Valley Vipers. The Power’s home opener is set for April 8 against the Moncton Motion at the EastLink Centre. States, a former assistant coach with the Island Storm in the National Basketball League of Canada, will receive his roster of players a week before training camp.

“I look forward to talking with every player and telling them about Charlottetown and Prince Edward Island,” he notes. “Some of them may not know about the area, but they are going to find out in a hurry that the people here will wrap themselves around them,” the coach adds. “I will ask you to play hard and give back to the community. Be a part of the community and the community will always support you.”

States' Assistant Coach, Kathy Quinn, and Manager of Business and Basketball Operations, Gail MacDonald, have been working together to come up with promotional and sales ideas.

The Island has hosted the Canada Winter Games during the past couple of weeks.

“A lot of volunteers have been very busy and they’ve told us they're going to join us after the Games,” says States, who also serves as an assistant coach with the Holland College Hurricanes. “It’s the same story with many of our sponsors. We know that Charlottetown has a history of supporting basketball. Our players are going to enjoy being in this community.”
