First Nations Pride

Community pride and an intense devotion for sports have always been integral aspects of life at Pabineau First Nation, and its 375 Mi’kmaq residents. Both characteristics will be evident when the Bathurst Bears begin the inaugural season of the Eastern Canadian Basketball League.

Pabineau Chief Terry Richardson expects several members of the community, just south west of Bathurst, to rally around the Bears and attend games.

“The Bears are going to be an important part of our lives in northern New Brunswick,” Richardson says. “The team will play a key role in helping all of us in the north grow together,” he adds. “We know that sports bring people together so a professional basketball team will be part of that for all the people of this part of New Brunswick.”

The First Nation has stepped up to be a major sponsor of the Bears, who begin their regular season on March 30 in Saint John against the Union before the teams square off in Bathurst’s home-opener on April 2 at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre. Richardson is an ardent basketball fan and he was a member of the Dalhousie Regional High Condors. The First Nation maintains a basketball court in front of the band offices.

“It’s a great game and we want to encourage our youth to become active,” the chief says. “We expect the Bears to help influence our young people “Some day, you may see some young people playing basketball at a high level.”

Richardson hopes the Bears will visit Pabineau, and possibly even play a pick-up game at the community court. Pabineau has a mission statement “to lead a nation to greatness through opportunity, education, empowerment and teamwork.
