Schedule Time
It’s taken patience, foresight and the ability to tear it apart and start all over again. The Eastern Canadian Basketball League will release its inaugural regular season schedule mid to late January.
Games for the Moncton Motion, Bathurst Bears, Saint John Union, Charlottetown Power, Summerside Slam, Truro Tide and Annapolis Valley Vipers will begin at the end of March.
“We’ve probably re-written the schedule 15 times, but it’s all coming together now,” says Ravi Verma, founder and executive officer of the league.
The league has worked with seven arenas in an effort to accommodate the dates suitable for every team. Arenas have declared open dates for basketball, then discovered later that those dates were not open because of other bookings.
“We like the way our season starts in March because it is generally a slower time in these markets,” Verma said. “We want to work with these communities and bring positive experiences to these cities through the game of basketball. We’re helping build communities,” he says.
The Moncton Motion were founded late in the process after the league reached an agreement with the Avenir Centre. It also forced the league to re-write the schedule again. Verma expects the league to expand for Year 2. Several Maritime arenas have expressed interest in joining for the second season.
“We started thinking about this league in 2020 and it’s taking off with a lot of big plans ahead of us.”
