Rising Tide

Patrick Havard’s extensive basketball coaching resume has taken him across Canada, but the 40 year-old’s latest job is close to his heart. Havard, a native of Truro, Nova Scotia, has been named head coach of the new Eastern Canadian Basketball League’s Truro Tide.

“Truro’s had a lot of great high school basketball, but nothing at a higher level for a long time so it’s exciting to think we are bringing the pro game to our community,” he says. “It’s exciting for those of us who love the game and exciting to know what pro basketball can bring to the area in terms of community involvement.”

Havard played at Mount St. Vincent University and Holland College then turned his attention to coaching. He served as an assistant coach at Acadia University then had stints at the University of Prince Edward Island and Crandall University before heading west to guide college teams in Olds, Alberta and Briercrest, Saskatchewan. He returned to the Maritimes and was an assistant with the Island Storm and Moncton Magic of the National Basketball League of Canada.

“I’ve had a lot of experience and learned from every stop along the way,” Havard says. “I know what the professional level is about and what kind of talent we’re going to see in this new league. “I also know it will be great for our local players,” he adds. “Some will get a chance and others will get a chance to see a level of play they can aspire to play someday.”

Havard will be telling members of the Tide to “play hard, play smart and play together” when training camp begins in early March. Games will start at the end of March. Truro businessman Brendan Hines is the Tide’s Manager of Business and Basketball Operations.
