Power-ful Message on PEI

Kathy Quinn is used to making history and she’s prepared to do the same with the Charlottetown Power in the new Eastern Canadian Basketball League. Quinn has represented Prince Edward Island at three versions of the Canada Games as a player – the first time when she was just 15 years-old.

She played for the University of Prince Edward Island for five seasons, and was the captain during her final year with the Panthers. Quinn has also served on the coaching staff with the Panthers and the Holland College Hurricanes. Now, she’s been selected as an assistant coach with the Power. The head coach is Dikran Zubunyan, a former professional coach in Turkey.

“We’re starting to generate some excitement in Charlottetown because we’re bringing a high-level of basketball to town,” Quinn says. “People are talking to me all the time and I’m getting emails all of the time,” she adds. “I know the basketball community is getting into it and we’re getting the message out to everyone else as well.”

The Power, Moncton Motion, Bathurst Bears, Saint John Union, Truro Tide, Valley Vipers and Summerside Slam will tip-off the inaugural season of the Eastern Canadian Basketball League at the end of March.

During Quinn’s coaching days at UPEI, she served as an assistant to Greg Gould, who is on the coaching staff of the Motion.

“We worked well together, but I’m sure we will have a good and healthy rivalry,” says Quinn, who works in the metering department with Maritime Electric. “It’s kind of funny to think to work with the electric company and I’m a coach with the Power.”

Murray expects the Power to make a meaningful impact in Charlottetown.

“What I like about this team and this league is the commitment to the community and working with youth teams and even groups outside of basketball,” she says.“I can hardly wait to get our players out in the community. These are great players who are going to inspire our young people in many ways.”

In Atlantic Canada, we opened our first Papa Johns franchise in Moncton, operating under the name of PJ Atlantic Restaurants Ltd. in 2009.
