Motion Building Mo-mentum

Rosters in the new Eastern Canadian Basketball League are being constructed and Moncton Motion head coach Todd McKillop has taken a sneak peak at a few of the names on his list. He can hardly wait for the first day of training camp.

“It’s exciting because it looks like we’ve got some very impressive young players and other guys who have a lot of professional experience,” McKillop says. “It’s going to be our roster and it will be our job to develop this diverse group into a team,” he adds. “As a coach, it’s exactly what we’re looking for and we’re expecting it to be a lot of fun for the players and the staff.”

McKillop, who will be assisted long-time coach and fellow Greater Moncton resident Greg Gould, is a former standout at St. Francis Xavier University. He’s also the head coach of the nationally-ranked Crandall University Chargers and was an assistant coach with the Moncton Magic of the National Basketball League of Canada. McKillop is often asked about the calibre of play he’s expecting to see in the new Eastern Canadian Basketball League.

McKillop is often asked about the caliber of play he’s expecting to see in the new Eastern Canadian Basketball League.

“In the basketball world, the NBA is the pinnacle and everyone is aware of the talent at that level,” McKillop says. “Below that, there are other leagues with a lot of similar talent and we’re trying to find out place at that level,” he adds. “There are a lot of incredibly talented players available and we’re going to see a lot of them in this league. “The other exciting part is that our league is going to give opportunities to Canadian players. The game has taken off in Canada and having a pro league at home is going to help bring out even more talent.”

Moncton, Bathurst Bears, Saint John Union. Charlottetown Power, Summerside Slam. Truro Tide and Valley Vipers will compete during the inaugural season. The regular season will begin in mid to late-March and run through the end of June.

“There’s a lot of excitement in Moncton, where people are happy to have pro basketball back in town after a three-year departure. People are hungry for it and so are we.”
