Beware of Bear Attacks

Veteran Bathurst Bears forward Brian Williams has a warning for the other five teams in the new Eastern Canadian Basketball League. The 30 year-old Baton Rouge, Louisiana native has only been with the Bears for one game, but he can’t believe they have opened the season with an 0-5 record.

“It’s a good group of guys who want to win and they are working hard every day,” Williams says. “We are ready to start winning games. “We have a lot of fast guys who are skilled offensive players,” he continues. “We also are ready to make the commitment to improve our defensive game.”

The Bears will be looking for their first win of the season tonight, when they host the Charlottetown Power (2-4). Game time is 7 p.m. at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre. Williams, a product of Oklahoma State and Louisiana Lafayette Universities, where he majored in business management, has played professional basketball around the world. He’s played in the NBA G League as well as in leagues in Slovakia, Hungary, Estonia, Taiwan and Mexico.

“I’m enjoying my time in Bathurst – it’s a small city and everyone is friendly,” Williams says. “We have a lot of support here and we want to win for the fans in Bathurst.”

The six-foot-five veteran plays a combo forward and guard, and he’ll also battle in the paint if asked.

“I’ll do whatever it takes to help the team win games.”

Meanwhile, the Moncton Motion (2-2) host the Valley Vipers (1-3) on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Avenir Centre. On Friday at 7 p.m., the Motion and first-place Tide (7-0) square off at Cobequid Education Centre in Truro and the Power visit the Saint John Union (4-2) at TD Station.
