Union Spoils Party
Saint John Union have opened the new Eastern Canadian Basketball League season with back-to-back wins over the Bathurst Bears.
The Union relied on strong outside shooting in the second half to record a 104-92 win in the Bears’ home-opener before 2,940 spectators Sunday afternoon at the K.C. Irving Centre.
The Bears had an 11-point lead early in the second quarter and held a 54-45 advantage at halftime before the Union rallied in the final 24 minutes. They connected on 13 three-pointers. The Union defeated the Bears on Friday night at TD Station in Saint John.
Chevron Brown led the Union with 32 points while London Hoxie added 25 and Tyrese Paul had 17. Stanley Mayambo paced the Bears with 30 points – 24 of them in the first half. OJ Watson and Tim Mitchell each netted 18 points.
The Bears return to action on Thursday, when they visit the Moncton Motion, who will be playing their first game of the season. Game time is 7 p.m. at the Avenir Centre. The Union hosts the Truro Tide (1-0) on Thursday at 7 p.m.
