Dynamic Duo

Saint John Union head coach Rob Spon knows there will be times during the team’s first season in the Eastern Canadian Basketball League when he’ll be tempted to put his assistant coach on the floor.

Afterall, his assistant coach is Anthony Anderson, a perennial all-star point guard and the all-time leading scorer in the National Basketball League of Canada.

“I’m sure I’ll be tempted to ask him to pull on a uniform so he can get us some points,” Spon says. “As a player, he always came up with a big basket – either a three from the outside or driving right to the basket,” he adds.

“He’s simply the best – scoring and defending. He could still help our team on the floor, but he’s also going to help us in his new role.”

The Saint John Union, Bathurst Bears, Moncton Motion, Charlottetown Power, Summerside Slam. Truro Tide and Valley Vipers will begin the league’s first season in mid-March.

Spon expects Anderson to be a positive influence on the Saint John roster.

“He represents everything you expect from a pro,” Spon says. “Double A has the highest basketball IQ I have ever seen and he’ll be sharing that knowledge with the younger guys. “We work well together and I’m looking forward to getting the season started.”

Spon expects the competition to be intense in the new league.
