Bournes

There was no time to wallow in self-pity so Andrew Bournes did not make excuses for himself despite suffering a major setback at the worst possible time for his basketball ambitions. Bournes, a Riverside, California native who turns 28 on March 10, seriously injured his left hand during the first half of his senior year with the Hope International University Royals.

He underwent surgery, but he didn’t let the injury define him. Instead, the six-foot-three shooting guard worked harder than ever in recovery and he was able to finish the season. Bournes will bring that fortitude and resilience to the new Eastern Canadian Basketball League, when training camps open in early March and games begin late in the month.

“In some ways, the injury was a blessing because it forced me to put a lot of work in,” Bournes says. “I’m a very competitive person, and I’ve always been that way,” he adds. “My parents instilled that in me at a very young age. “My parents didn’t have it very easy, but they told me to work hard and good things will happen.”

Following graduation in 2018, Bournes has played in two different professional leagues in Mexico. He’s looking forward to making his first trip to Canada.

“I know the league is going to have a lot of very good players, but I thrive on the competition,” Bournes notes. “I’d like to play a couple of years in Canada, get better as a player and maybe get a contract in the NBA Summer League or the NBA G League. “I’m also looking forward to meeting new people and working with kids. I coach 10-14 year-old kids now and I love helping them reach their goals.”
